How to get help with MakeRoom, what to check first, and what to send so a reply can be useful. Nothing MakeRoom does loses data, so most questions are about finding where something went.

Requirements

  • macOS 15 or later.
  • An Apple silicon Mac.
  • Distributed as a direct download with Hardened Runtime. Beta builds are not yet notarized by Apple, so macOS asks you to approve each version once (System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway). Not available in the Mac App Store, because whole-disk inspection is not possible inside the App Sandbox.

A scan skipped some locations

Without Full Disk Access, macOS hides places like Mail, Messages and Safari data from apps. MakeRoom would rather skip them and tell you than ask once per folder. The scan coverage card on Overview names what was not included and offers to open the Full Disk Access setting. Grant it, then scan again.

A drive is not connected

Nothing has been deleted. Data moved to a drive lives on that drive, and the original path is a link to it. Connect the drive and MakeRoom reconnects on its own, even if macOS mounted it at a new path. MakeRoom identifies drives by volume UUID, never by name.

Something changed since the scan

Every item is revalidated immediately before an action. If a folder grew, moved or changed type since the scan, MakeRoom refuses the action and says why. Scan again and review the item afresh.

MakeRoom will not open

MakeRoom refuses to open a database it cannot open safely, and it never deletes or replaces one on its own. The message tells you which case you are in: a database written by a newer version, a file that needs review, or a permissions problem on the state directory. See uninstalling and recovering by hand before moving anything aside.

Recovering without the app

Every move MakeRoom makes leaves ordinary filesystem objects: a symlink where the folder was, and the folder itself on the drive. The uninstall page shows how to reverse a move with readlink, ditto and mv.

Keys and what they cover

Cleaning this Mac is free forever: scanning, classification, inspection, history and Move to Trash need no key, no account and no network connection. Moving data off this Mac is the one capability a key covers, and its fourteen-day trial starts the first time you move something rather than the day you installed.

A key costs nothing. MakeRoom is free while we can keep it that way — there is nothing to pay and nothing to cancel. Keys are issued and managed on the web, never inside the app: you sign in, register a Mac by the code MakeRoom shows you, and download the file that Mac is bound to. Registering it starts its term, and the portal states the date that term ends. One key names exactly one Mac; register as many Macs as you use, each with its own term and key.

When a term ends, register that Mac again and another starts the same day, free and without anyone approving it — or ask for more time in the portal, where extensions are free and given out by hand. If a key lapses, moving is shown disabled with the reason and one next step — everything else keeps working, and bringing data back, repairing a link and reconnecting a drive are never gated in any state.
